Seasonal Beauty Detox: Autumn


The autumnal equinox arrives tomorrow and, just like that, it's fall.

The weather might trick you into thinking it's still summer for few more weeks, but nature– and your body– are prepping for a new season.  As a steadfast lover of summer, I've found that the best way to ease into the seasons ahead is to treat my body in a manner that reflects the feel of the season. During autumn, I think about warmth, eating hearty and grounding foods like root vegetables, slowing down and breathing in the cool fall air.

The two most important organs that need detox and care  in autumn are the lungs and the large intestine. Both lung and large intestinal problems have long been linked to problem skin (eczema, dry patches, rashes, blotchy skin, acne, chapped lips) in Chinese and Western medicine. Without these vital organs functioning well, your body cannot detox and function optimally.

How can you detox and support these organs?

  • Add warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and anise to fall meals. These support both intestinal and respiratory function.
  • Drink more water, since urine output triples when temperatures are cold!
  • Use essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint to decongest nasal passages.
  • Limit refined sugar and flour, dairy, caffeine and alcohol to keep your gut healthy.
  • Try drinking fenugreek tea, which softens and dissolves mucus in the lungs and large intestine.

Also, take advantage of as much outdoor exercise as you can before the weather gets very cold. Go for a run and feel the cool air in your lungs; make a delicious soup from sweet potatoes, carrots or butternut squash and embrace the beauty of autumn.
