Autumn Product Obsessions 2016

As the weather cools, I'm craving a moody lip color, a melty cleanser, a buttery-rich eye cream, and a lotion that uses botanical power to reduce season-transitioning inflammation. Ready to meet these natural and organic superstars? Here's what's in my purse and gathered in my bathroom this fall...

Goop by Juice Beauty Luminous Melting Cleanser, $90

No exaggeration- the first time I tried this rich, buttery cleansing balm, I loved its feel so much that I gave myself a spontaneous facial. By principle, I no longer use cleansers that strip my skin of moisture, but even in a lineup of creamy natural cleansers, this product sets itself apart. It's easy to get addicted the balm-like formula, as well as the routine of scooping out a little dab and feeling it melt as you massage it into your skin. I find it most satisfying to use when I'm wearing mascara, liner, and the whole nine yards, since it effortlesly breaks down makeup. The 79% organic formula includes almond, olive, jojoba, and coconut oils, plus shea and cocoa butters that cleanse by breaking down dirt and oils and ushering them away without leaving you parched. Of course, the experience isn't complete without the organic cleansing cloth that's included to help you fully rinse and gently exfoliate (you'll end with a nice layer of moisture remaining on your skin).

Bottega Organica Illuminate Eye Contour Cream, $145

(Also available in the October 2016 Beauty Heroes Discovery Box— a $35 monthly subscription)

What better way to greet colder weather than with a buttery-rich eye cream that delivers a stunning range of powerful healers and hydrators for your delicate eye area? I was thrilled to receive this Bottega Organica Illuminate Eye Contour Cream in my October Beauty Heroes Discovery box, and even more impressed with the product when I took a thorough look at its ingredient list. Bottega Organica, which creates 'farm-to-skin luxury' products, sources the majority of its certified organic ingredients (think fresh herbs, cold-pressed olive oil, and botanicals like echinacea, geranium, and the exotic prawn sage) from an organic farm in Italy and an organic farm in Upstate New York. The result is an eye cream that is a dream to apply, and leaves your eye area calmer, brighter, and more hydrated, naturally. To sign up for the monthly Beauty Heroes Discovery box (my absolute favorite mail day each month!), check out the Beauty Heroes site.

100% Pure Lip Caramel in Truffle, $25

Lip color is one of those products that I urge all of my clients to choose with a discerning eye, since we regularly ingest its ingredients. This gorgeous rust-tinged rose 'lip caramel' from 100% Pure is a perfect example of a lip color that's safe to ingest, but doesn't compromise one bit on color or feel. It goes on with a lip gloss applicator, but has none of the heavy, sticky residue that you feel with most glosses. This lip color is so highly pigmented and light that it reminds me more of a stain, which I absolutely love! After testing the Truffle Lip Caramel (which gets its deep hue from fruit, root, and achiote seed natural pigments), I want the entire shade range. 100% Pure created a winner with this formula!

Tata Harper Clarifying Moisturizer, $105

I've been a fan of Tata Harper's products since her very early days. As she has slowly and carefully added to her line, she continues to surpass expectations with gorgeous formulas that work. Her latest launch, Clarifying Moisturizer, amps up the calming, healing, and balancing ingredients in a season when lots of us struggle with transitional breakouts and slowed cell turnover. Whether your skin is blemish-prone all year, or autumn and winter are trouble times, this lightweight moisturizer is a perfect choice. You won't worry about moisture that's too rich for easily-clogged pores, and you won't be stuck with dryness and irritation because you skimped on hydration. Superstar ingredients in this formula include a plant sugar extract that helps feed probiotic (read: blemish-preventing) bacteria on your skin's surface, and a blend of healing fruit extracts and oils that calm redness and fight free radical damage. The only thing left to mention is the heavenly botanical scent produced by all of these natural ingredients—a Tata signature.

Support Healthy Skin with Topical Probiotic Power

For decades now, cleaning the surface of our skin has been a collective obsession. Germ-free, dirt-free, and oil-free is how we have come to imagine our skin's ideal state, so we scrub, suds, and lather up like crazy. But, as it happens, we have it all wrong. Gorgeous, radiant, healthy skin has a natural balance of oil and bacteria—and a lot of it.

More than 100 trillion microbes live in and on us, influencing so many of the core functions of our bodies that relate to beauty. On our skin, these microbes impact inflammation, immune defense, allergies and sensitivities, and the health of the skin barrier, which is directly related to the radiance and clarity of our complexions—right down to issues like hyperpigmentation and wrinkles! As you might imagine, cultivating and maintaining a healthy population of good bacteria on the skin is one secret to radiance that we're just now beginning to understand.

I've been a major advocate of probiotics (both via supplements and food) for beauty since i started my own journey to clear my skin many years ago. My microbiome had been negatively impacted by poor diet, food allergies, and antibiotics, and a combo of probiotics and fermented foods helped me restore the health of my skin by rebuilding those beneficial microbes. Probiotic supplements may be yesterday's news, but probiotic treatments for the surface of the skin are actually a brand new thing.

You may say that you've already seen 'probiotic skin care,' but those products (unless refrigerated to maintain their probiotic bacteria) are erroneously named. These products are often effective because they contain prebiotics—ingredients that feed and support probiotic bacteria—but they don't contain probiotics themselves. Both the preservatives in these formulas and lack of refrigeration kill off probiotic bacteria, so they're not delivering probiotics to the surface of your skin.

But—I've found a topical product that does contain live probiotic bacteria! It's called LiviaOne Daily Liquid Probiotics Topical Spray. This water-based organic spray applies just like a toner or hydration mist, albeit one that's packed with 12 strains of probiotic bacteria. This spray gets shipped to you with a cold pack to maintain the live bacteria inside, and you store it in the fridge. I've used it for calming irritated skin and stopping a yeast infection—both cases a huge success! This spray also benefits oral health (sore throat, cavities, mouth sores), as well as skin irritation, infections, and sensitivity. I think it's such an amazing product innovation and imagine that there will be many more products like this to come in the short-term future.

Now you might ask: couldn't you get topical probiotic benefits from applying fermented foods to your face instead? Totally, but if you applied, say, fermented sauerkraut to your face, you'd stink and your skin would freak out from the extra acid and salt. This spray prevents all of that, and it's a great option for restoring healthy bacteria on the skin, rather than stripping it away.

You can purchase this LiviaOne topical spray (2 oz for $29.95) on Amazon or at liviaglobal.com. It should be shipped to you with a cold pack, then kept in the fridge, to protect its probiotic bacteria.

A Crunchy, Savory Snack for Clear Skin

Zinc: this beauty mineral is essential for skin healing, the growth of new cells and collagen, clear skin, immunity, and eye health. It's one of my top picks for powerhouse beauty nutrients.

BUT— many of us are missing out on the beauty benefits of zinc, since it's commonly low in our diets!

One reason for our low zinc is that we don't store this mineral in our bodies (and it gets depleted easily if you take a birth control pill). So eating zinc-rich foods is something to be conscious of when you're picking out your daily meals and snacks.

For a list of some of my favorite beauty food sources of zinc, check out my earlier post on zinc (which explains why a zinc supplement is not always a good choice).

And for an easy snack to munch on tonight— here's a recipe for crunchy, savory Roasted Chickpeas (an excellent source of zinc, and a beautifying snack food)...

Eat Pretty: My Second Baby Arrives Today!

Dear readers,

As I write this post, I'm propped against the island in my kitchen, with a 1-month old baby strapped to my chest. My multitasking skills have been put to the test over the past few weeks as I worked, with every free moment, to get the word out about the launch of another baby that I've been working on for over 2 years: Eat Pretty.

Back in the fall of 2011, when I first decided to pitch the idea for a book about the fundamentals of beauty nutrition (brimming with fresh, colorful, delicious recipes that would make any reader want to pack her diet with beautifying foods), I had no idea that it would enter the world at very the same time as my little boy, Jack. I've been through a range of emotions this month, from elation to exhaustion, from extreme stress to overwhelming peace. My little boy was born. And now, the book is here.

I want this book to empower and inspire, to transform the way you view simple daily activities like snacking, sleeping, exercising and caring for your skin, and to give you tools and information that hasn't been made available to you before. The Eat Pretty approach to beauty helped me out of a deep beauty rut, at a time when breakouts, eczema, allergies, digestive issues and weight gain were a daily frustration. I want you to have access to this information too, so you never have to feel stuck, or less than your best.

Even if I haven't been able to make this, the launch day for Eat Pretty, into a blockbuster celebration, there has already been so much amazing feedback and love for this book, and it's allowed me to share it in ways I never expected. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to so many in the beauty and health community, and to so many members of the media who have picked up Eat Pretty, loved the info inside, and chose to share it with others. Your endorsement of the book means more than I can ever express!

I hope you, my readers, will pick up a copy as well, since this book was written for YOU! It's filled with over 200 pages of information that is absolutely essential in understanding your body and beauty— the info inside gives you the tools to look and feel your best by creating a lifestyle that supports you as an individual. Inside, you'll find a book broken down by seasons, with grocery shopping lists,  beauty intentions, and pampering rituals that help you embrace all that nature has to offer you during each season of the year. The book wouldn't be complete without an explanation of the nutritional info that will transform your skin, hair, nails, mood and weight, and chapters that help you connect your digestion, hormone balance, sleep patterns, emotional wellbeing and pH balance to your appearance. It's the information I sought years ago, and couldn't find.

Now it's in one place, in one pretty package.

Thank you for your support of Eat Pretty!

In beauty and health,

Jolene
