The Ayurveda-Inspired Hair Oil That's Perfect for Autumn Beauty

Late summer is the time of year when the word 'parched' comes to mind, over and over. I drive by browning lawns, watch crispy leaves raining down from the trees, and feel my own skin drink in its nighttime oil treatment more readily than it has in months. And then there's my hair. A season of intense heat and sun exposure, plus regular plunges into ocean and pool water, means that my strands feel (and look, though I hate to admit it) parched from mid-shaft to ends. That stringy, tangly effect is not fun. A little extra conditioner always helps bring hair back to life, but nothing is more indulgent and effective than an oil-based treatment to help restore moisture and shine to hair that's just plain dried-out.

When my September Beauty Heroes discovery box arrived bearing Uma Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil, my hair scored a major victory. This year, Uma's hair oil is my first foray into fall; it's my first acknowledgement that yes, soon the unruly beach waves will revert to well-tamed strands. Since I have fine hair, I prefer to use hair oil as an occasional scalp treatment, not a leave-in product. But I experimented with this oil and found that just 2-3 drops applied to the ends of my damp hair is fantastic for softening and smoothing.

In just a few weeks, Uma's Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil has become a desired ritual 1) for the results and 2) for its natural scent, a herbal blend of rosemary, grapefruit, lemon, hibiscus, and cypriol (a root that has smoky, leathery scent notes that you immediately detect in this formula) that really draws you in.

I also loved sampling the Uma line because it's inspired by the practices of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine that has influenced my approach to beauty nutrition. Also included in the Beauty Heroes September box is the Uma Ultimate Brightening Face Mask, a clay-based Ayurvedic treatment that uses saffron, sandalwood, cinnamon,  honey, and papaya to exfoliate and purify the skin. I loved its gentle brightening effect on my skin, and plan to get a full size!

To check out Uma Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil or Ultimate Brightening Face Mask, head over to the Beauty Heroes store, or grab one of the few remaining September Beauty Heroes boxes before they're spoken for!

NOTE: If you purchase a Beauty Heroes subscription, or one of the aforementioned products, I will receive a small commission on behalf of Beauty Heroes. My honest review and experience with Beauty Heroes and these products was in no way influenced by my affiliate status.

On My Hair in May...Luxury Haircare from Olja

olja-natural-beauty-luxury-hair

I've tried a lot of luxury hair lines over the years, but their ingredients disappoint me, from the $33 a bottle Kerastase (full of parabens) to the $37 Oribe and the cult-fave Living Proof (brimming with endocrine disruptors like synthetic fragrance and butylphenyl methylpropional). They're just not products I feel good about massaging into my head, and I'm certainly not going to pay top dollar to do so, you know?

But if you look hard, you'll find that there are haircare splurges that are both healthy AND luxurious. Meet Olja. This brand new handmade line (it just became available in the fall of 2012) is packed with some of the finest natural beauty ingredients, and bottled in elegant violet glass to preserve the integrity of its natural oils. These products are expensive, but in most cases you only need a small amount at a time. The founder of Olja, Amy Lindwall, is a seasoned stylist who believes that our hair is an extension and an expression of our well-being and our physical selves. She hand cultivates and picks the herbs used in Olja products on her farm in Upstate New York, and uses principles of medical herbalism to formulate them. The love and quality in these products shows!

Here are the 4 Olja products that I'm obsessed with (they rival products from any prestige hair care line—and they're natural!):
