Allure's 2011 Best of Beauty Awards are out, and the beauty editor side of me couldn't wait to pour over the list of winners. I checked out the full list of honorees online, paying special attention to the roster of 11 'Natural Wonders' products. They're the only 'natural' products that got props in a huge list of conventional beauty items. So they've got to be awesome, right? Here's my take on the products in the natural list, including one product that didn't actually deserve the label of 'natural' and two natural products that are hidden in other categories in the story. I starred my absolute faves, which are truly winners in performance AND ingredients.
Allure's Best of Beauty Winners in the 'Natural Wonders' category:
Intelligent Nutrients Lip Delivery Antioxidant Gloss in Purple Maize. This certified organic gloss is a great pick because it's safe to eat (yes, it might even be good for you) and the pale color can be safely applied mirror-less, without fear of a messy color drama.
**RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up. I love this cover up and its little glass pot, which tucks right into my palm. Dab on the creamy, coconut oil and cocoa butter-based concealer and it melts right in like second skin, with a texture that's thick enough to truly cover blemishes.
Yes to Carrots Natural Glow Facial Towelettes. These towelettes definitely remove makeup easily (even eye makeup), but they contain added fragrance that occasionally bothers my sensitive skin. Love the drugstore price, but I feel that this one is hit or miss.
**Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. Hands down one of my favorite masks ever. Just ran out of mine, since I took it with me everywhere I traveled this summer and used it like mad to soothe and smooth my skin. Time to get more.
Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Rosey. Have yet to try this pretty, creamy cheek essential, but I love the ingredients already- including argan oil, beeswax, shea butter and cocoa butter, plus mineral pigments.
**Arcona Cranberry Gommage Exfoliate. I love the cranberry-raspberry smell of this natural scrub. Definitely a winner for natural exfoliation, but be gentle and don't over-scrub.
John Masters Organics Bare Unscented Shampoo and Conditioner. This duo is natural through and through, but it left my hair feeling frizzy when I tested it. I plan to try it again, just because John Masters products are consistently good picks!
Davines Love Lovely Smoothing Conditioner. This conditioner contains a few parabens, added fragrance and petrochemicals, so I'm personally disqualifying it from the natural category! (Pays to be a smart label reader, ladies- don't get fooled).
Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. This yummy and deeply hydrating cream is perfect to keep in a purse or pocket. I love the bright lemon smell from lemon essential oil.
Clark's Botanicals Extra Rich Lip Tint. This tint isn't as lip-smackingly organic as the Intelligent Nutrients balm (above), but it packs a bit more color, making it a fun makeup item to keep in your bag.
What are your thoughts on Allure's Best of Beauty picks? And what natural products would you have put on the list?
