Graceful Aging: Is Wellness the Key?

From where  I stand (looking ahead at a fast-approaching 30), I have lots of expectations about how I'll age. Of course I'm pretty certain that I won't know the half of it until I'm there. What I do know is that I have control over much of the outcome, including my attitude toward the process. I want to age with peace and contentment, not dread. I want to stay active, energetic and vital.  I want to love my lines and wrinkles, just as I love my body. Who says I can't? Are you with me ladies?!

Don't get me wrong, I take as many preventative, anti-aging steps as I can right now- but not with toxic beauty products that are going to have a negative effect on my body in the long run or pricey cosmetic procedures that are going to make me look like I'm from an alternate reality. I'm talking natural & organic beauty products, fresh, nutrient-dense foods, exercise and self-care. These are the tools that make all the difference; you want them on your side. If you're interested in joining me on this path, use these tips to help you look your most radiant today, tomorrow- and all of the tomorrows to come.

Get rid of refined sugar in your diet. Refined sugar (yes, high fructose corn syrup is most definitely included) causes inflammation and glycation, slows collagen production and saps skin of moisture. To put it bluntly, a sweet tooth unchecked will give you wrinkles!

Choose natural and organic personal care products. There is no dearth of toxic beauty products that claim to be magical anti-agers. Are they going to anti-age you (whatever that means)? Perhaps for today, but the use of chemicals on your body over time is going to cancel out their benefits. Find natural products that enhance what you have- safely.

Eat your antioxidants. Believe it: you are what you eat. Antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies (go for the greens & the bright colors) nourish your body and work in your defense to combat free radicals that accelerate aging. Making whole foods a priority in your diet is one form of beauty insurance.

Get serious about sun protection. Even if you're not getting burned, the unprotected hours you log in the sun are adding up. UVA rays in particular cause unseen damage that will surface later in life as age spots, wrinkles, rough patches- use your imagination. Find a natural, broad spectrum moisturizer with SPF that you can wear everyday under makeup and stick to it. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide provide the best natural UV protection.

Increase the amount of raw food in your diet. It's true, raw foods are amazing for keeping the body running like a well-oiled machine. You'll see the added benefits of improved skin tone and texture, and the energy boost you get from good nutrition will be no coincidence.

Take skin-saving supplements. Keep skin supple with Omega 3s, take calcium-building vitamin D, and look into mega-antioxidants like resveratrol, glutathione and CoQ-10. Nutrition from food sources is best, but supplements help get you there!

Relax. This is a MUST. Cortisol levels that remain elevated day after day, month after month take a huge toll on your immune system and lead to thinning skin, visible blood vessels, dull skin tone and wrinkles. Not to mention worry lines. Find your healthy stress release and make it a priority- whether it's yoga, massage, meditation, dancing- whatever keeps you happy!

And above all...swear off smoking and tanning- nothing ages you faster!
